Hola GFOP!
Welcome back to On the Continent, a tasty meze of European football’s best fixtures, players and stories. Barring a sequence of miracles, the big three leagues are all but decided, but there’s still one historic title race going down to the wire:
With five matches to play, the SPL is tighter than Scottish-born David Byrne’s Coachella set and as Hearts continue to outrun Celtic and Rangers, a 41-year record is ready to be broken. 🏴
La Liga takes a back seat for a Copa del Rey final between Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad that’s steeped in more narrative than “The Sun Also Rises.” 🇪🇸
After Inter Milan reminded Como who the bosses of Lombardy are while vague title rivals Napoli and AC Milan choked, the Scudetto should end up in Cristian Chivu’s arms for the first time since he lifted it as a player 16 years ago. 🇮🇹
ii. If you’re looking for a great read to enjoy today, be sure to check out our good friend Rory Smith’s new piece on why Ultra culture is something English football should be cheering on. Read that here. 📖
iii. Shoutout to Harry Kane for scoring his 50th (yes, 5-0) goal of the season. What a year the England captain is having. 📈
Also, this angle of Michael Olise calling game on Real Madrid yesterday is just pinpoint deliciousness. Dude is about to do serious business at the World Cup for France. 😮💨
iv. Also, if you love a vintage kit as much as we do, be sure to check out this beautiful spread on La Liga’s recent retro weekend. Every league should be doing this. 👕
Cheers,

P.S. A collab we never knew we needed: Inter Milan and… Pink Floyd? 🐷
🇪🇸 Copa del Rey Final: A North vs. South American Managerial Battle
Atlético Madrid vs. Real Sociedad (Saturday, 3 p.m. ET, ESPN+)
After 15 years at the helm of Atlético Madrid, Diego Simeone is accustomed to motivating his side with a siege mentality, assuming the rabid underdog role in these finals, but against Real Sociedad on Saturday, he’ll have to write a new team talk. After outsmarting La Liga winners-in-waiting, Barcelona, to reach the UCL semifinal on Tuesday, the Argentine can taste both a perfect swan song for Antoine Griezmann, and a famous season for his club, but up north in the Basque country, something just as special is sizzling.
The word “miracle” is thrown around generously in sport, but when New Jersey’s Pellegrino Matarazzo is being branded as a “god” and “savior” in San Sebastián, it feels appropriate. His first match in charge of a spiraling Real Sociedad was a draw against Atléti just before Christmas, and he now meets Simeone again after taking his team from relegation danger to the verge of the UCL spots. The neutral might be accustomed to rooting for Atléti’s man in black, but it’ll be hard to not get behind the Sociedad boss, who’s probably the most popular New Jerseyan in Europe since Bruce Springsteen.
🇮🇹 Serie A: Inter Hone in on the Scudetto
Inter Milan vs. Cagliari (Friday, 2:45 p.m. ET, Paramount+)
With six games left to play, Cristian Chivu has taken a firm hold of the Serie A steering wheel as Antonio Conte and Max Allegri kick their legs and cry helplessly in the back. Their Napoli and Milan sides both crashed out last week, allowing Inter Milan to secure a seismic nine-point lead at the top of the table having come home from Como with all three points after a cinematic 4-3 classic. Marcus Thuram’s brace compensated for the absence of captain Lautaro Martínez, whose injury-hampered season hit another bump ahead of the World Cup. The Argentine’s muscle strain means he’ll miss out on the chance to extend his lead at the top of Serie A’s scoring chart against one of its weakest sides tomorrow.
Napoli vs. Lazio (Saturday, 12 p.m. ET, Paramount+)
While Liverpool take the prize for Europe’s roughest title defense, Napoli’s own tepid effort at retaining the Scudetto will hurt Antonio Conte. He’s rumored to be the heir apparent to the cursed Italy national team job, but securing the services of their messianic midfielder, Scott McTominay, is currently higher on Napoli’s priority list. Despite his side’s inconsistent form, the Scot has scored 12 goals this season and the club are praying to tie him down to four more years in the City of the Sun. Saturday’s match against smoking Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio is probably inconsequential, but Conte won’t give up on the title until it’s mathematically impossible.
🇩🇪 Bundesliga: Bayern Chase Records & Trophies
Bayern Munich vs. Stuttgart (Sunday, 11:30 a.m. ET, ESPN2)
The electricity in the Allianz Arena this weekend could probably be powered by the energy Bayern Munich and their fans cultivated in yesterday’s Herculean decimation of Real Madrid. Next on the agenda for Vincent Kompany’s star-studded side is wrapping up the Bundesliga as soon as possible so focus can be poured into winning their first Champions League since 2020. All three of their mythical attacking trio of Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Michael Olise scored against Los Blancos yesterday, and ironically in the Bundesliga, Bayern are 17 away from beating Madrid’s 2012 record of the most goals in a top-five league season. Former Bayern Munich II (Electric Boogaloo) coach Sebastian Hoeneß is regarded as one of the best managers in Germany and his Stuttgart side are third, looking to secure UCL qualification.
Hoffenheim vs. Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 9:30 a.m. ET, ESPN+)
Despite a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, Borussia Dortmund are currently swimming in their own second-placed pool, which is a vast improvement on last season, when they scraped into the top four. Hoffenheim are sixth and will be fueled by their outside chance of reaching the UCL spots, an accomplishment that will require goals from striker Fisnik Asllani, who Dortmund manager Niko Kovač reportedly wants to recruit to replace Serhou Guirassy this summer.
🏴 Scotland’s Historic Title Race
The last time we did a wellness check on the Scottish Premier League, there were three points dividing Hearts, Rangers and Celtic, and now, nearly two months on, (checks table) nothing has changed. Outside of Glasgow, most of the football universe has a new second team in Edinburgh’s league-leading Hearts, who have history and destiny in their hands.
When Derek McInnes was appointed last May, no one predicted that the 54-year-old would soon be mentioned in the same breath as Sir Alex Ferguson, the last manager to break the Old Firm’s stranglehold on the SPL, back in 1985. Like Leicester winning the Premier League in 2016, Hearts’ title charge has come from a unique cocktail of mayhem at the established elite aligning with their own ascendance that’s been built on a solid defense. McInnes’ side have conceded the fewest goals in the division, but with all three teams set to face each other one more time before the season ends, their toughest tests are yet to come.
One to Watch: Sporting’s Wonder Wing ⭐️

Drawing comparisons to Lamine Yamal is the compliment of all compliments for any young footballer in this modern age. However, in Portugal, there is belief that not only does Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda have similarities to the Spaniard sensation, but rather, he can rival him for the next decade. When Portuguese legend Luis Figo left Sporting as a teen, he won the Ballon d’Or five years later: some think that Quenda can do the same.
It’s rare to find a left-footed player who can line up on either side of the pitch as both a wingback or winger, and it’s why Chelsea—who Quenda will join this summer—signed him in March 2025 for $54.2 million at just 17 years old. He’s already shown he can assist forwards playing in North London, but imagining the Portuguese winger alongside Estêvão, Cole Palmer and João Pedro is scintillating, and it might finally be the missing puzzle piece of the BlueCo project.
