The USMNT’s World Cup run brought all corners of American sporting fandom together, and now, everyone knows the words to “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by heart. However, the USA’s exit was on par with the cursed 2019 movie adaptation of “Cats.” So, rather than dwell on the recent past, let’s focus instead on the exciting future.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino just re-signed through the 2030 World Cup, and now his player pool is returning to action as most of Europe’s top leagues kick off this week, while others are already in motion. Our guide to the Yanks in Europe this season rests below, where we take a look at who is playing where while mentioning a few fresh faces you should just maybe keep tabs on as the next cycle of silliness kicks off.
More: Wondering when the USMNT boys will be back in town? You won’t have to wait long, with a four-match window of international friendlies on the horizon.
🏴 Premier League + Championship
Reigning Conference League champions Crystal Palace now sport two Americans in stalwart defender Chris Richards and 19-year-old attacking prospect Zavier Gozo. The Eagles finished 15th last season, just one spot behind Leeds United midfielder (and noted BEC advocate) Brenden Aaronson. On the South Coast, Bournemouth and Tyler Adams will be playing in the Europa League for the first time ever, while in London, fullback Antonee ‘Jedi’ Robinson enters his seventh season with Fulham. Lastly, there’s Haji Wright at newly promoted Coventry, who is playing Premier League football for the first time in his career after being the Sky Blues’ leading scorer for the past three seasons
In the Championship, Middlesbrough — née ‘Muricabrough — now call three Americans their own in Max Arfsten, Aidan Morris and Sebastian Berhalter. Competing against them for promotion will be Derby County and forward Patrick Agyemang, though the 25-year-old is out until January with an Achilles injury that caused him to miss the World Cup.
🇮🇹 Serie A
In Italy, the USMNT's arguably best and most polarizing player, Christian Pulisic, has a massive campaign ahead. After a world-class 2024/25 season for AC Milan with 17 goals and 10 assists, he followed it up last year with a goalless stretch for his club that still dates back to December. In the words of Ted Lasso, he needs to “be a goldfish” and put those woes behind him. Another member of the Rossoneri in need of a statement season is Yunus Musah, who was a forgotten man this summer after not making the World Cup squad.
Elsewhere, Texas’ finest Weston McKennie will look to top his 15 goal contributions last season for Juventus. And in the bottom half of the table, recently promoted Venezia is led by 2024 Olympian and club captain Gianluca Busio, while Parma will roll out 2025 U-20 World Cup Golden Boot winner Benjamin Cremaschi.
🇩🇪 Bundesliga
Germany used to be the USMNT hub in Europe, but only two first-teamers will play in the Bundesliga this year in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s (what a mouthful) Joe Scally and Bayer Leverkusen’s Malik Tillman. The 24-year-old Tillman stole the hearts of the U.S. faithful at the World Cup with two brilliant free-kick goals, potentially becoming the new face of the franchise in the process.
Additionally, two of the top USYNT prospects for 2030 are also in Germany with Borussia Dortmund’s 17-year-old Mathis Albert and his former club teammate, 20-year-old Cole Campbell, who joined SV Elversberg this summer. Albert was a breakout performer at the U-17 World Cup last November, while Campbell is a dual-national recruit from Iceland who is searching for a fresh start.
🇫🇷 Ligue 1
Following his rather stunning move from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Strasbourg, midfielder Gio Reyna will try to finally find his footing in France. Star forward Folarin Balogun will lead the line for Monaco as things currently stand, though he has been heavily linked with a move abroad. Meanwhile, defender Mark McKenzie is a regular starter for the chronically mid-table Toulouse. Winger Tim Weah remains at Marseille, while midfielder defender Tanner Tessmann takes on a new role with Lyon.
🇪🇺 The Rest of Europe
🇪🇸 La Liga: Atlético Madrid’s Johnny Cardoso and Villarreal defender Alex Freeman will both play UCL football this year while pushing for repeat top-four finishes domestically.
🇳🇱 Eredivisie: PSV duo Ricardo Pepi and Sergiño Dest will try to help their Eindhoven club to a fourth straight league title, while 2023 U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year Kevin Paredes has been handed a career reset, joining Utrecht on a free from Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
🏴 Scottish Premiership: Reigning champions Celtic and their center-back pairing of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty are fighting for their sixth straight league title.
🇩🇰 Danish Superliga: For the REAL sickos out there, this one’s for you. Barcelona’s Diego Kochen is on loan at Lyngby, and is highly rated by the Blaugrana. He could be the USMNT’s next great No.1, but we all know USMNT goalkeepers are supposed to be bald, so… can he be the one to break the mold? In the meantime, watch his chat with Rog from last year here.
